Oodles (or "Doodles," as they’re known in some parts of the world) have taken Australia by storm, and it’s easy to see why. These lovable, curly-coated companions are known for their intelligence, affectionate nature, and hypoallergenic coats. But what’s it really like owning an Oodle—especially when that Oodle happens to be Fergus, our 42kg Groodle?
Here’s an inside look at life with a larger-than-life Oodle, the joys (and challenges) that come with it, and what you should know if you’re thinking about adding one to your family.
Meet Fergus: The 42kg Gentle Giant
When people think of Groodles (Golden Retriever x Poodles), they often picture a medium-sized, fluffy teddy bear. Well, Fergus missed that memo! At 42kg, he’s a big boy—bigger than some Labradors, and certainly larger than many expect from a Groodle. But with that size comes an even bigger heart.
Oodles are known for their friendly, people-loving nature, and Fergus is no exception. He thrives on attention, adores meeting new people, and believes every guest is there specifically to see him. If you want a dog that loves being part of the action, an Oodle might be perfect for you.
The Best Parts of Owning an Oodle
✔ Affectionate & Loyal: Oodles are often called "Velcro dogs" because they love sticking by your side. Fergus is happiest when he’s near his humans—whether that’s curling up at our feet or watching every move we make.
✔ Highly Intelligent: With Poodle genes in the mix, Oodles are super smart and pick up training quickly. Fergus learned basic commands in no time and thrives on mental stimulation, from puzzle toys to training games.
✔ Energetic & Playful: Groodles, in particular, have that Golden Retriever playfulness, which means lots of zoomies, fetch, and goofy antics. If you’re active and enjoy outdoor adventures, an Oodle is a great fit.
✔ Low-Shedding Coat: One of the biggest draws of Oodles is their hypoallergenic, low-shedding coats. While Fergus does need regular grooming, we don’t deal with fur all over the house—win!
The Challenges of Owning an Oodle
🐾 High Maintenance Coat: That beautiful, curly coat requires regular brushing and professional grooming to prevent matting. If you’re not up for the commitment, Oodle ownership might be tricky.
🐾 Energy Levels: Fergus may be 42kg, but he still has endless puppy energy. Without daily exercise, he gets restless—Oodles need regular walks, playtime, and mental stimulation to stay happy.
🐾 Separation Anxiety Prone: Many Oodles form strong bonds with their humans, which is amazing—until you need to leave the house. Some struggle with separation anxiety and don’t like being left alone for long periods.
🐾 Size Surprises: If you’re considering a Groodle, keep in mind that sizes vary. Fergus ended up on the bigger end of the spectrum, which means more food, bigger beds, and a stronger leash pull!
Is an Oodle Right for You?
If you want an affectionate, intelligent, and social dog, an Oodle could be the perfect addition to your family. But they do require time, training, and commitment—especially when it comes to grooming and exercise.
For us, life with Fergus is full of laughter, love, and plenty of zoomies. He may be a little bigger than expected, but we wouldn’t have it any other way!
