The Secret to Keeping Your Dog Calm During Halloween

Halloween is full of spooky surprises, but for our furry friends, the excitement can be downright overwhelming.

As Trick or Treating gains popularity in Australia, I'm sure this Halloween you will see more gremlins roaming about in your neighbourhoods.

More houses are also getting done up with the spookiest decorations and Fergus has had a startle or two in our daily walks from light up Frankensteins to dangling skeletons.

If you're expecting Trick or Treaters at your house then the constant doorbells and visiting ghosts might potentially increase your dog's anxiety and stress levels if they are extra sensitive.

At Ferguson’s we know you want your pup to feel calm and cosy during the festivities. Here’s how to help them enjoy a stress-free Halloween!

Create a Safe Space

Set up a comfy, quiet zone where your dog can escape the Halloween madness.

Use their favourite bed, blanket, and maybe a few toys to keep them entertained and relaxed. Calming music works wonders too!

Costumes – Keep It Simple

As much as we love dressing up our dogs, complicated costumes can make them uneasy.

Opt for something simple, or better yet, skip the costume and offer them an extra treat instead. After all, a happy pup is the best look!

Exercise Before the Madness

A well-exercised dog is a calm dog. Take your pup for a nice long walk before the trick-or-treaters start arriving.

It’ll help them burn off energy and feel more relaxed when things get noisy.

Treat Time Distraction

When in doubt, treat it out!

Keep some of Ferguson’s long lasting chews handy. Distracting your pup with a delicious chew or snack will keep their mind off the spooky sounds  outside.

Comfort Without Overdoing It

While it’s important to reassure your dog, try not to overly baby them when they’re anxious.

Dogs pick up on our emotions, so staying calm yourself is key. Offer a treat, give them a cuddle, and maintain a positive vibe.

Final Thoughts

At Ferguson’s, we believe that a calm dog is a happy dog. Stock up on their favourite treats, create a peaceful environment, and let your pup enjoy the Halloween season without the scares! 🎃
