Harness vs. Collar – Important To Know

Did you know that choosing the right leash for your unique pup can completely change your daily walks?

From better control to more ease, it can be a complete game-changer!

However, choosing between the two ultimates; the harness and the collar, for your dog’s walks can be tricky as both have their perks.

Let’s break down the benefits of each so you can make the best decision for your furry friend.

Harness: Ideal for Pullers and Small Breeds

If your dog tends to pull on the leash or has a smaller, more delicate frame, a harness might be the way to go.

Harnesses distribute pressure more evenly across your dog’s chest and back, reducing strain on their neck. This is especially helpful for breeds like Pugs, Bulldogs, and other pups prone to respiratory issues.

Plus, harnesses give you more control, making them perfect for energetic or excitable dogs who need a bit more guidance on walks.

Collar: Great for Well-Behaved Walkers

For dogs that walk calmly by your side, a collar can be a simple, lightweight option.

Collars allow you to easily attach ID tags and are generally more convenient for everyday use.

However, if your dog tends to tug, a collar could put pressure on their throat, potentially causing discomfort or injury, especially for larger, strong pullers.

Tasty Treats!

Whether you choose a harness or collar, having treats on hand makes training and walking more fun for both you and your dog!

Rewarding your pup with a healthy snack from Ferguson's after a good walk helps reinforce positive behaviour and makes the experience even more enjoyable. Plus, it’s a great way to show your dog some extra love!

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, the choice between a harness and a collar depends on your dog’s walking style and needs.

For better control and safety, a harness is often the preferred choice, while collars are more suited for well-trained dogs. No matter what you choose, don’t forget the walking treats!

Thank you so much for your helpful advice about lead type decisions. My small dog easily pulled out of her collar, then I had the problem of catching her. Using a harness type lead has been much more effective. Lyn .
