Are Functional Dog Treats Functional?

If you haven't already heard, there is so much chatter about functional treats or functional dog food these days. Slapped on dog food packaging left and right, the word "functional" is supposed to indicate that this dog food is better than the apparently non-functional ones out there - but are they?

And exactly what does "functional" actually even mean?

Well, functional dog treats go beyond the simple pleasure of a tasty snack. These treats are specifically designed to provide additional health benefits for your furry friend. Unlike conventional treats that may be primarily focused on flavour, functional treats are formulated with ingredients that target specific health concerns or contribute to overall well-being.

Functional treats bring all three 'extras' together in as a reward, a treat and a supplement. The goal is to provide some extra benefit (or function) nutritionally while tasting great or providing a level of chewing enjoyment or benefit.

Below are typical Functional Dog Treats that aim to target common dog ailments:

Joint Health Treats

Many functional treats are crafted with ingredients like glucosamine and chondroitin to support joint health. These treats are especially beneficial for older dogs or breeds prone to joint issues.

Example: Seafood treats like Shark Cartilage, Shark Tails and Salmon Tails are rich in glucosamine and chondroitin

Dental Health Treats

Dental problems can be a common concern for dogs. Functional treats may incorporate ingredients that promote dental health, such as abrasives to help reduce plaque and tartar buildup.

Example: Roo Tail, Bully Sticks and Cow Hooves are tough as treats to help scrape plaque and tartar buildup off your doggos' canines.

Skin and Coat Treats

Some dogs may experience skin or coat issues, and functional treats can contain ingredients like omega-3 fatty acids or biotin to promote a healthy coat and skin.

Example: Sardines, Chicken Feet and Salmon Tails are loaded with omega-3 fatty acids that will give your fur baby the shiniest fur they deserve.

Digestive Health Treats

If your dog has a sensitive stomach, functional treats with probiotics or prebiotics can aid in maintaining a healthy digestive system.

Example: Moo Tripe can soothe an upset tummy and Chicken Jerky is a gentle treat for sensitive tummies and great for new puppies!

Functional dog treats have emerged as a valuable addition to the arsenal of tools available for pet care. Whether addressing specific health concerns or simply enhancing your dog's overall well-being, functional treats offer a thoughtful way to show your love and care.

Next time you are looking for a treat, consider its functional benefits – your fur babies will thank you with wagging tails and slobbery kisses!
